Born in the village Dhamial in Sialkot district (now in Pakistan), he migrated to India during Partition and dedicated his life to literature and education.Dr. Bedi began collecting folk stories at a young age, and over the decades, he published more than 80 books, including children’s tales, short stories, literary criticism, and folklore studies. His most iconic contribution is the eight-volume “Punjabi Lokdhara Vishav Kosh”, a global encyclopedia of Punjabi folklore that took him over 45 years to compile — a rare and monumental feat.He served as a professor at Dayal Singh College, Delhi, and was deeply committed to using literature to preserve Punjabi cultural heritage. In 1988, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection "Galīeṅ Chikkar Dūrī Ghar".Dr. Bedi believed in the power of simple storytelling to teach deep values.
