"She's crazy!" GOING MENTAL was born out of host Eileen Kelly’s commitment to destigmatizing mental health concerns while reclaiming her own narrative. In 2016, Eileen created the blog KILLER AND A SWEET THANG to make sense of things she wished she could have discussed with her mother, whom she lost at a young age: crushes, boyfriends, going on birth control, getting her period. Eileen quickly found herself running one of the most popular blogs of the 2010s, publishing hundreds of articles on sex and identity from other young writers. Despite such early success, internal struggles and a crippling personality disorder drove Eileen to seek treatment at McLean — one of the oldest mental hospitals in the country. After five months and some serious self-discovery, she returned to the outside world looking for a way to disseminate what she'd learned in treatment and connect to others with similar experiences: That's how GOING MENTAL was born. Each week, Eileen interviews some of today’s most compelling media figures, artists, authors, and celebrities about their own mental health journeys, along with a range of experts who provide information and support around various mental conditions. Surviving Female Genital Mutilation with Shamsa Araweelo

Trigger warning: Severe physical and emotional trauma. Shamsa Araweelo grew up in Somalia, where when she was only 6 years old, she was taken by family to be cut. Today, she opens up to Eileen about her experience suffering from female genital mutilation (FGM). FGM refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is often carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15 as a way to suppress sexuality and ensure virginity. According to the United Nations, an estimated 200 million women and girls worldwide have undergone some form of FGM. Shamsa now resides in the UK and shares her experience to raise awareness and funds for those who are victims of FGM. She and Eileen discuss her heartbreaking story, how she refuses to be defined by it, why FGM occurs, how we can stop it, and more.
