Grounded in Maine Podcast is an open conversation about being mindful of how we show up for the world. We discuss the role we play in sustainability including gardening and preserving, recycling and composting and even household DIY. It's a podcast about our commitment to ecological responsibility, and learning different ways to be part of the solution.

I was recently approached by Mykhailo and Vlad of Terra Mora on Instagram and was just so impressed with what they're offering that I wanted to feature them on the podcast and learn more about them. These two are both 21 yearrs old, and in the beginning of the current Russia/Ukraine war, lost their homes and just about everything, but they've built themselves back up, and are dedicated to building a sustainable world for the next generation (Mykhailo has a 1 year old son and spouse, so very motivated). Their business is Terra Mora - wooden table ware and serving dishes, etc, and it's all so beautiful!Mykhailo and Vlad will be shipping their items through a distributer in Washington DC, where they'll be shipping orders. Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. We talk about soil, critters - cute and less cute, and his first sustainability venture as a young person cleaning up after race track events (there's a pro race track less than 15 minutes from me). He is a real wealth of knowledge!Jr has 3 (THREE) podcasts: WV Uncommonplace, WV Uncommonplace Interviews and Sessions, and Sparrows Under Review. There's even a 4th, that he's not sure the name of ( it's WV Uncommonplace Presents), and they're all different - don't ask me how he keeps track of what goes where, because I'm overwhelmed sometimes with just one... Kenya Rothstein is the host of the podcast Thank You For Saying NO, about things happen in life that feel impossible and hard, but turn out to be the best thing for us. I've been following her for a little while now, and at some point she messaged me and said something like "your podcast is about sustainability - I need to be a guest!" I wasn't going to say no - definitely not to an attorney...Kenya is an Environmental Attorney in CA - and soon adding Washington DC! She works for the Plaintiff, and gets to support our oceans and air - how cool is that? She has so many ideas that people can get involved in protecting our natural spaces! My biggest takeaway was for my new area, to talk with restaurants and ask them to advise customers to ASK for a straw or plastic cutlery, and ask the restaurants to make that a new practice, and to talk to them in a way that helps them realize there's a way to help save money AND save waste. I love how simple that sounds, and how doable it can be. I'm totally going to try this!Hear the full conversation here-You can find Kenya on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@thankyouforsayingnoShe's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/thankyouforsayingno/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. This is a shorty, you guys (you're welcome!) - just thought I'd give a little update, since some huge life shifts have happened for me - some, maybe a lot of you, follow on social media, so you know that I recently moved - short update: it's mostly going well! Also, as it has been for a while now, menopause was brought up - October is Menopause Awareness Month - as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Alzheimers Awareness Month - and the election, and all the tension that accompanies - to which I'm just going to say BE KIND please. Crazy weather and high stress is so hard on everyone, and some of us could be on the brink of a breakdown... we don't always know who needs just a moment of kindness, so please just try. But I'll be posting more menopause stuff as it comes up - in my life, and in my friends' lives, it has been helpful. If you've experienced symptoms, please pay attention! I seriously want to scream what I'm learning from the rooftops, because the new study results are life changing - for real! There are several books and documentaries coming out that are blowing the lid off of the darkness we've been living in, and I'm so ready for acknowledgement and validation and RELIEF!I said this in the episode, but there are definitely lonely times in my new place, so if you need some time away, give me a heads up, and my door will always be open. This is a beautiful place, southern Virginia. I'll feed you well - I'm in tight with the farmers, and my little food forest is coming along.....You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. Natalie Hodge is my very first Virginia podcast guest since moving here, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you! She just recently (this year!) started gardening in containers, and she is HOOKED! I love her story of how and why she started, and how excited she gets talking about growing her own food on her balcony - and hearing about her future plans-- "they" say in the homesteading world that chickens are the gateway drug to farming, but growing your own food brings out a very special experience that hooks you in as well! I didn't ask, but I wonder how long until she calls herself a "plant lady" or "plant mom?"I joined a few Facebook groups before moving to VA, and I happened to see Natalie posting about her Foodscapes program on the local news, and I felt I needed to reach out to her. We learned so much about each other in our first Zoom meeting, and I was just obsessed with her story of not being able to grow anything until she spent time with them - the plant people will understand what we mean--I couldn't possibly leave out her awesome message that she hopes you'll take away from this conversation - "Keep it simple...small changes matter." LOVE this - it's so true!Natalie has her own media company called Rudy's Girl Media, and she's been working with a Zero Waste program theough the VA Public Media to produce her Foodscapes segment. She's got new stuff coming out very soon (I think this week?!)!How to find Natalie:her website is here: https://www.rudysgirl.com/She's on Instagram as https://www.instagram.com/nataliekhodge/ and also https://www.instagram.com/rudysgirlmedia/ Her Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/nataliekhodgeYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. I was thinking that the title of this episode should be "How on Earth did Amy score The Old Farmer's Almanac on the Podcast?? But it was too many characters... Shall we make it the UNofficial title?Carol Connare is the 14th editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac, and only the 2nd woman- since 1792! She talks about the beginnings of the Almanac, and about the great topics discussed (besides the weather), like recipes, fun animal stories, lifestyle trends, and so on. She and her team collect a pool of topics and articles, then pick the best of all of those - and they also respond to emails, phone calls and snail mail! Sometimes they have to do research before responding, but they ALWAYS do! Millions of readers, and anyone who writes in gets a response, which seems unheard of, but so very cool.A couple of listeners, Jenny Boghun and Brenda Simmons (both previous podcast guests!) wrote in questions, and they were all answered inside this conversation, in almost traditional Almanac form. I know for sure that Jenny is going to love this!Have you checked out the Almanac before? It covers so many articles and topics about gardening and paying attention to Earth's weather patterns, because nature can help provide a fulfilling, healthy lifestyle. And we all want that, right? The official Almanac website is here: https://www.almanac.com/ (there are cool tools, articles, recipes, etc here!)You can follow The Old Farmer's Almanac on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/theoldfarmersalmanacOr on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/theoldfarmersalmanac/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. I loved this conversation with Rhonda Linn so much - we have a lot in common - she's just a bit ahead of me. A big one for me is the title of this episode - A Homesteading State of Mind - you don't know this, but that was almost the name of this podcast! For real!Rhonda is a writer, so I'm going to use some of her words, so I don't make it all clumsy- Her Substack is called Earthen Jar; Stars, and it's so beautiful - I highly recommend! We're talking about Homesteading mostly - Rhonda lives pretty simply (LOVE that!), except on 36 acres, so it's not SO simple--- She started her homestead journey while living in an apartment! So her words below are from personal experience. Here are her words about what she hopes you will take from this conversation:"Anyone can be a homesteader no matter where you live or what resourcesyou have. It's a mindset. Also living by the seasons allows us to live withgrace and peace and makes new solutions and possibilities emerge where wecouldn't see them before."Her words are so lovely and graceful, and she is an inspiration of taking things day by day and just doing the best you can. Wow, I loved this conversation with Aimee Gallo! She calls herself 'unapologetically candid,' in her podcast description, and I'm 100% here for it. Aimee's not afraid to question or disagree with what we've been hearing our whole lives about nutrition on her podcast, Blasphemous Nutrition. She's not just being contrary; she's been studying nutrition her whole life (since 12 years old, REALLY!). I just love how Aimee tells you that we've basically been fed garbage in the understanding that we have been given, that there are no real studies to back statements up - she focuses on meat a lot - a very controversial subject, of course. And she spent several years Vegan, so she's really speaking from her research AND life experience. She's a Nutrition Coach, by the way---She also talks about how food nourishes us, not just 'is it healthy or not.' I mentioned a recent post about electrolytes, and how that kind of blew my mind, and also just made me really think about what I KNOW about. my food. This conversation is entertaining and enlightening, and really makes you consider what we know. This conversation with Jane Lee Rankin was so easy - it felt like it just flowed for me - it helps that we are very like-minded... Whatever it was, I had the best time getting to know her! Jane Lee Rankin is a 2 time author, and also a farmer in Agritourism, opening up her farm so that others can come and feel the peace that comes with farming (or maybe just digging in the dirt and interacting with animals), and an active community member. She is also a public speaker, talking about Agritourism and entrepreneurship.Jane talks about Agritourism, her journey to living on Apple Hill Farm, an old apple orchard, and how it ALLLLL started: an alpaca. Yup, you read that. She moved far from where she was, and took on an old farm, and started this whole dream because she came face to face with an alpaca. Jane's message she wanted you to leave with: "Live your dream."I think I'll just leave it at that. You can find Jane Lee Rankin just about everywhere - adding all her links below:Jane's and the farm's websites: https://janeleerankin.com/https://applehillfarmnc.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jane.l.rankin.1also here: Â https://www.facebook.com/applehillfarmInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/janeleerankin/and here: https://www.instagram.com/applehillfarmnc/Her YouTube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/@JaneLeeRankinAHFAnd on Linkedin here:Â https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-lee-rankin-948732a9/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform. Ooh, this conversation with Kyira Wackett was so good! Kyira hosts her own podcast, Untethering Shame, and brought such a necessary conversation for me, as every week I'm talking about all of these cool people who are doing amazing things in sustainability, and this week we're talking about SHAME, which feels so important right now. It's so true, and I often think about people who feel shame around sustainability - folks who feel like if they can't afford the expensive things that say sustainable on them, they're not allowed to feel like a part of the solution. I feel it, too! I've had people that I know hang their head and mention something they feel bad about around plastic/recycling or composting; like I'm a perfect person who does everything right... I'm also human - AND if you notice, I'm talking to these folks so I can learn, too, and highlight what THEY'RE doing... Nobody's perfect, and there's no such thing (that I'm aware of) as perfect sustainability. We should only be comparing ourselves to our yesterday self, and nobody else. Easier said than done, I know, but that's the goal- Kyira, a licensed therapist AND coach, has so many enlightening thoughts on this topic, obviously, and I'm thrilled that she was able to share them with us all, and hopefully not just ease our minds but also empower us.These are her words, from her guest form: "There is no all or nothing, you don't have to be perfect, and that the fear we all have about the state of the world is real, but that it can't be your primary motivation, or you will get stuck in pain and fear and negative self-talk. The pressure will be rooted to the wrong purpose." YouTube is where Kyira is most active - here's her channel: https://www.youtube.com/@adversityrising You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform. I've been following Alexa Pavan for a long time on Instagram - I love everything she posts and stands for, and I was so thrilled when she said yes to a conversation! I may have been a little giddy talking with her... Usually I like to get the back story of a guest, and get to the point where their life changed to be more sustainable, but Alexa doesn't have that - she grew up in a pretty sustainable household, and just extended it to include the rest of the world. In her social media, she touches on shopping small, to support local businesses instead of padding the pockets of the ultra rich - and also to stop the big trucks from polluting the air. She talks about keeping our oceans clean, and why that's important (her parents own a scuba diving business in FL, so she's very passionate about the ocean). She talks about imperfect sustainability, and why we shouldn't focus on doing EVERYTHING, but do what we're able to, and if everyone did what they could, we can make a real difference. And to get in touch with nature - spend more time outside and appreciate what's around usAlexa encourages community advocacy, and to remember that our voices matter! Whew, this conversation was so good! Lacey and her husband are homesteading in North Carolina, and I noticed they're in a town that I was actually really hoping to find a house in, so that felt kind of Kismet to start off - but there's just so much more that she does that resonates and interests me! My favorite thing we talked about was the food clubs they're organizing to help make sure their community has access to healthy, fresh, local food. How awesome is that? I'll be heading to visit them once I'm settled to see what they've got going on, and how I can take part/contribute to the food club, and I'm so excited about that! They also are teaching their children the ins and outs of homesteading, like using whole animal, and why that's important. Also the value of community (you know I love that!) and taking care of each other. Lacey is so smart, and she and her husband Drew host their own podcast called The Schoolhouse Life, where they talk about these same things and more.I learned so much from talking with Lacey! I loved this conversation with Amanda Russo, talking about breathwork and how it can actually heal us if we give it the chance.I met Amanda just a couple of months ago, but we've been following each other for many months, so I'm excited to get some quality time with her. I'm inspired by her spontaneous nature, and her free spirit, and she is also SO intune to every moment.Amanda focuses on breathwork because when she tried it the first time she had such an impactful session that she had to learn more and learned how to provide the same gift to others.*Full disclosure* I'm scheduling a breathwork session with Amanda, so I feel more knowledgeable -- and also to do some healing personally. I'm fascinated by all the healing modalities, and am so curious to share whether I feel different afterward or not--Amanda was a hoot! I tease Harry Duran about how we first connected, because it makes me feel good about my scrappiness as a podcaster. He wasn't mean, just way bigger than me - and he still is, we're just connected now, which I'm so grateful for!Harry's first podcast, Podcast Junkies just hit the 10 year mark recently, and I'm super grateful to have been a guest (see episode 332). If you remember the show Inside the Actor's Studio, with James Lipton, it's based on that, but for podcasters. There are so many podcasters, and everyone has a story --His 2nd podcast, Vertical Farming, is about just that, and has brought him all over the world. He talks to CEOs of companies in the field to learn more about practices and purpose, and they love the chance to be featured, and Harry loves learning. so it's a win win. He also has a group that he's guiding in podcasting called podcast Blueprint - Harry talks about it on his Fullcast website here: https://fullcast.co/Harry and his partner moved a few years ago to Minnesota from NYC, and he doesn't talk about it a lot, so I thought it would be fun to see how that transition has been - listen to the full episode here! Sam Mitchell approached me, and was just so dynamic that I had to have him on the podcast to talk about Autism and his podcast Autism Rocks and Rolls, and you'll see why here!I definitely couldn't do any better putting Sam into words, so I'm copying these from his initial email: "I am a high-functioning human being on the autism spectrum, but have a mission: to show people that I am not broken, do not need to be fixed, there is no normal in this world, and I am successful, with autism. I want to celebrate the successes of all people. I embrace who I am and feel as though everyone should do the same." And this: "I also am a motivational speaker, entrepreneur, sell merchandise, have several sponsors, sell ad space, am writer and blogger, and love to promote my podcast and business. I also have a published TED Talk called Souled Structure."I loved talking with Sam, and learning all about the fascinating guests he's had on his podcast, and the great things he's doing with it. He is definitely not broken; he's an inspration - and he's a college student! Here's the message he wanted everyone to leave with from our conversation: "You can be successful no matter what condition or disability you have." And that seems very plain to me- You can find just about everything Sam and Autism Rocks and Rolls here on the website https://autismrocksandrolls.com/ - be sure to check out his excellent TedX Talk here!Sam's Instagram page is here:Â https://www.instagram.com/autismrocksandrollspod/You can join his Facebook Group here:Â https://www.facebook.com/groups/229025325159144Sam is also on Linkedin here:Â https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-mitchell-b782b31b1/And on TikTok:Â https://www.tiktok.com/@sammitchell100?lang:%20enAnd on X:Â https://x.com/SamMitc95075321You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the Show. I've been listening to Karin Velez's podcast Just Grow Something for quite a while, because I love how she offers helpful, bite sized truth bombs about growing produce every episode - and she also has this voice that is so easy for me to listen to... Karin's story about where her podcast came from is fascinating, and she is offering super helpful info in all areas of growing food in bite sized amounts to help me understand how and why to make changes in my gardening practices. We also discussed nutritional value, and why she wants EVERYONE to grow something; for the nutritional benefits and the mental benefits (#dirttherapy) as well.Karin is also a runner - and a new runner, at that, and we talk about why running, and how it's going. Please check out Just Grow Something wherever you listen to podcasts - you'll be glad you did! You can send me messages(this is new!)!Man, I loved this conversation with Carrie Hoffman of Bigger Life Adventures! I was sold with sustainable travel, but this conversation is SO much more- Carrie lives the sustainable lifestyle - She lives on 10 acres in the mountains of Arizona! You can probably hear (and hopefully can tune out) the crackly sound, but she lives out in the open and that's our reality - if you can let go of that sound, you'll get her important messageAs a Trauma Informed Yoga Instructor, Carrie takes her role very seriously. She takes her retreats all over the world, to inspiring, peaceful and SLOW paces, to let the body calm and remember what peace feels like.A part that really stood out for me was that she goes to some of the same places; they form relationships with the residents, and support them as well - not overwhelming them with thousands of tourists - it's more than just money, after all. She talks about the amount of litter left after cruise ships leave. She is very mindful of so many things . I loved this message that Carrie was hoping you would gather from our conversation:"Yoga is more than just a physical exercise you do in a studio. Being a yoga means being aware of your impacts on others and the world around you."And also this: "I use travel as a way to open people's eyes to climate change and global inequity ..."This is a big conversation, and I absolutely loved it. I love any chance to learn how to be a better human, and Carrie does just that. You can find Carrie at her website http://www.biggerlifeadventures.comShe's also on the socials here https://www.instagram.com/biggerlifeadventures/ and here https://www.facebook.com/biggerlifeadventuresSupport the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. You can send me messages(this is new!)!I have a big request, you guys - I need some MALE people to give their perspective on menopause - I'm really doing it - I've been talking about the Menopause Panel since November/December, and it's finally happening. I'm so excited for these conversations, and to help people feel empowered and not feel broken when their body is changing in ways we aren't expecting; that we are not alone, and we don't need to quietly suffer with the changes. In talking, we learn ways that have helped others, and gain a community of support. In my own journey, I've lost a marriage, a partner, most of my self esteem and my home. It wasn't ALL menopause, but because by the time I figured out what was happening, it was too late. I want a better understanding about what goes on on the other side, a better understanding FOR the other side, and I want a better outcome for others. Also, I appreciate your patience as I'll probably take a couple of weeks off of recording while I move in August. There will most likely be adventures to report on once I'm settled!Thank you, as always, for listening to this little podcast, and for your support and curiosity about different ways we can practice sustainability. This is the most fun I've ever had, and I appreciate all the feedback and listens!Support the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com.
